Toka-gakudo in the main enclosure of Edo Castle, present time Imperial Palace East Garden,was built to celebrate the 60th birthday of the late Empress Kojun.

This unique building, designed by Imai Kenji, was built in 1966to commemorate the Kanreki the 60th birthday of the late Empress Kojun whose husband was the Emperor Hirohito.  The name of the building Toka-gakudo literally means peach blossom music hall having to do with a special emblem given to her.  All the Imperial family members have their own emblem called oshirushi which is used to represent on their personal belongings.  Her oshirushi was peach blossom.  The octagonal exterior of the building was designed after eight petals of a clematis flower.  The eight subjects in connection with the Empress are described on each exterior walls with mosaic tiles.  This hall’s seating capacity is only 200 though, a concert performed by the graduates of each year of the major music colleges in Tokyo is regularly held here.  This concert is necessarily attended by the Emperor, Empress and other Imperial family members.  This regular concert aside, other concerts are irregularly held here, but they are basically just for the Imperial family members because many special seats for them are arranged right in front of the stage.
