The southernmost tip of the main island of Japan is the Shio-no-Misaki Point. A panoramic view of the Pacific Ocean opens out to the south, as shown in the first picture. The Shio-no-Misaki Lighthouse stands here, as shown in the second picture. This lighthouse is one of the oldest Western style lighthouses in Japan in accordance with a treaty with Western countries, stipulating that Japan build eight lighthouses for them. This originally was a wooden building, which was built in 1870, but was rebuilt in stone in 1878. Through the repeated improvement of optical instruments, it still works for the safe navigation.
